Presenting the Finnish Education Model 2024

I recently had the incredible opportunity to present a webinar on the Finnish education system—a system that reflects the long-standing efforts behind Finland’s transformation. Over decades, Finland has evolved from a modest agricultural society into a diversified industrial nation that now champions sustainable development. This evolution is not just a matter of economic growth but a story of visionary education, continuous innovation, and a commitment to creating an inclusive and forward-thinking society.

A Deep-Rooted Transformation

The Finnish education system is a testament to a long journey of transformation. It embodies the relentless efforts that have allowed Finland to transition from its roots as an agricultural community to a modern, industrial powerhouse. This progress has been driven by investments in education and sustainable practices, ensuring that growth is both inclusive and forward-looking. The journey is one of perseverance and dedication, where every step in education reform has contributed to building a society that values innovation, equality, and sustainability.

Personal Reflections on the Finnish Model

From preparing for the webinar to delivering the presentation, I felt a profound connection to this narrative. The Finnish model isn’t merely an educational strategy—it’s a reflection of national resilience and a continuous pursuit of excellence. I shared insights on how Finnish teachers, empowered by trust and autonomy, craft learning environments that not only foster academic excellence but also instill values essential for sustainable development. It’s a model where modern digital tools and innovative teaching methods merge with a deep respect for tradition and community.

The Power of Innovation and Sustainability

In my presentation, I emphasized how Finland’s educational framework is intrinsically linked to its broader societal goals. The same principles that drive classroom innovation—flexibility, inclusivity, and forward-thinking—are also the bedrock of Finland’s sustainable development policies. This approach ensures that every generation is equipped with the skills and values needed to sustain progress and address future challenges. The blend of innovation with a commitment to sustainability has been crucial in Finland’s journey, turning historical challenges into a future filled with promise.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Edusteps

I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to Edusteps for the opportunity to present at this webinar. Their support and collaboration were vital in bringing this vision to life. Working with Edusteps, an organization dedicated to pushing the boundaries of innovative education, allowed me to share these ideas with a broader audience. Their commitment to excellence mirrors the very spirit of Finnish educational progress—long-term, thoughtful, and sustainable. Thank you, Edusteps, for enabling this platform and for your unwavering dedication to advancing education.

Looking to the Future

Reflecting on this journey reaffirms my belief in the power of education as a transformative force. By embracing the legacy of Finland’s development—from its agricultural past to its industrial and sustainable present—we can inspire change worldwide. I look forward to exploring further opportunities to share insights and collaborate with organizations that are committed to making a lasting impact on education.

Thank you for reading, and I hope this reflection inspires you to appreciate the long-term vision that continues to drive progress in education and society as a whole.

EdCamp Ukraine 2019: A Journey into the Future of Digital Learning and Healing

Last week at the Beit Dan Cultural Center in Kharkiv, the energy was palpable as educators, innovators, and digital pioneers gathered for EdCamp Ukraine 2019. Over the span of six days, from July 5 to July 10, the event unfolded as a vibrant exploration of how modern information technologies can transform our schools—and, indeed, our lives.

The day kicked off with an inspiring keynote session led by the dynamic duo, Pekka Ouli and Ianina Sivakova. Their presentation, “Can We Heal with VR?” captivated the audience with a blend of science and vision. Drawing on historical breakthroughs by Hunter Hoffman and David Patterson in 1996, they revealed how immersive virtual reality, originally pioneered for pain control, has evolved into a tool with far-reaching applications—from alleviating the burden of dementia to teaching us about our own fears. The session not only highlighted the science behind VR but also showcased real-world examples where VR is making a difference, such as its use by summer workers in the city of Äänekoski and its integration into creative learning projects through platforms like Thinglink. Ianina, known as a Thinglink Ambassador and a passionate advocate for digital learning, underscored how these technologies are reshaping language studies and interactive learning environments.

Later, the interactive session “HOW TO LEARN FUTURE IN DIGILAB,” also led by Pekka Ouli and Ianina Sivakova, took center stage. Divided into four engaging parts, the session encouraged participants to envision the skills needed for the workforce of 2002–2030. Through dynamic discussions, collaborative brainstorming on Padlet, and practical exercises, educators debated which professions have vanished over the past 20 years and which will emerge in the next two decades. The session seamlessly blended theory with practice: from exploring immersive learning environments within Digilab to simulating real-world tasks like creating VR 360 content for travel information about Äänekoski. Participants were not only tasked with identifying the skills of the future but also challenged to design actionable plans to integrate these skills into their teaching methods.

The event also highlighted several inspiring case studies. Juuso’s journey into launching a Minecraft workshop business, Toni’s transformation from student to coach using DJI drones, and the collaborative virtual reality showroom project with John Deere—all served as tangible examples of how innovative educational practices are taking shape around the world. International collaborations were a recurring theme, with discussions about Erasmus trips to Poland and Portugal, participation in Microsoft E2 in Paris, and even Minecraft workshops that reached as far as India. These stories underscored a global commitment to sharing ideas and advancing digital education.

In the final “LETS DO IT” segment, participants rolled up their sleeves to put theory into practice. They worked with tools like Thinglink to transform 360 photos and videos from the event into interactive digital experiences, reflecting on their learning outcomes and sharing their creative visions with one another. This hands-on approach not only cemented the new ideas discussed but also showcased the true power of collaborative, experiential learning.

EdCamp Ukraine 2019 proved to be more than just a conference—it was a launchpad for future-ready education. Inspired by the groundbreaking ideas presented by Pekka Ouli and Ianina Sivakova, and invigorated by the collective energy of international eduheroes, I left the event feeling empowered and excited for the endless possibilities that lie ahead in digital learning.

I also look forward to future collaboration with Ukrainian participants as we plan our “Future Skills” project from Leader Viisari. This initiative will build on the innovative spirit of EdCamp Ukraine and push the boundaries of how we prepare learners for tomorrow’s challenges.

Welcome to the future of education—where technology, creativity, and collaboration unite to shape a brighter tomorrow.

Most Digital act of 2018

We are thrilled to announce that our innovative forestry machine simulator has been honored as the “Digital Act of the Year 2018” in the public administration category. This recognition was bestowed upon us at the Atea Focus event held at Helsinki’s Messukeskus on Tuesday, September 25th.

Our simulator offers students an immersive virtual reality experience, replicating the controls and operations of actual forestry machinery. This technology allows learners to master essential skills in a safe and controlled environment before transitioning to real-world equipment.

The competition jury commended our project as “a fine example of the importance of innovation in developing teaching methods.” They highlighted our effective use of new technology and smart collaboration with industry partners, noting that “virtual glasses give everyone the opportunity to learn and then safely move on to practicing with a real forest machine.”

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported us, especially those who voted in the public poll. This achievement underscores our dedication to advancing education through technology and reinforces our commitment to pioneering innovative teaching solutions.
